Symbolic Nails | an intersection of: cosmetology 💅🏼 • ritual 🍵 • symbolism 🌀 • science👩🏻🔬
Cosmetology is an ancient art that goes deep beyond the surface level —
All over the world, there are people who recognize the act of decorating our physical vessels as ritual. Some of us never forgot this truth, and some of us are in the process of remembering: we create power when we decorate our bodies.
Whether the embellishments we choose or receive are meant to last us for a day or a lifetime, one thing is for certain: when we feel confident in our appearance, we can direct our energy more easily.
There is a reason that people throughout time have put effort and creativity into their appearances, whether it’s before war, ceremony, or lovemaking.
Combined with intention, the things we adorn ourselves with can often amplify, conceal, or refine the energy coming through our vessels.

Herbalism & Ceremonial Cosmetology
Some of the oldest cosmetic dyes and oils were made from plants, and can be dated back to over 10,000 years ago*.
The art of manicuring specifically can be dated back to over 5,000 years ago*, and there are records documenting the use of herbal soaks for the feet that go back >3,500 years*. Even some of our distant primate relatives care for and decorate their bodies using plants, rubbing aromatic herbal compounds on each other’s fur to repel parasites, and wearing blades of grass as earrings. The use of plants to bring protection and beauty to our vessels is ancestral.
Ceremonial Cosmetology is devoted to the remembrance of how plants, natural elements, and symbolism can help us adorn, enchant, and care for our bodies 🌿✨🪞
*Although these are the numbers documented by western archeologists, it is important to remember that the Indigenous peoples of the world have been doing these things long before settler historians say so.
